Well, That Didn't Work - An Autobiography

The author, in her natural selfie-habitat.
I had a couple of people purposefully mention to me this week that my dedication, my drive, and my can-do, never-give-up attitude had inspired them... and while I appreciated each of the sentiments I received, they were kind of hard to accept. I am 100% my harshest critic... but when I want something, I do not typically give up without getting it. So it's hard to swallow when something that I want slips through my fingers and drops just beyond my grasp.  Like today, for instance- I had a picture of how my day was going to go. All of the things I was going to accomplish... but then, dance parties in the car on the way to get vegetables, strawberry shortcake, playing on the playground at the vegetable stand, and lunch with my sisters and my little niece and nephew happened instead. I'm ok with every ounce of that. But what I'm not ok with, is allowing technology to get the best of me. I had all of these great video clips that I took today that I wanted to stitch together in iMovie, and I couldn't figure it out, so I gave up. You'll have to use your imagination. They were epic, though.

I started my morning off as I do nearly every Sunday, with breakfast. The original purpose of this blog, if any of you even remember that, was that I would travel somewhere I hadn't been for breakfast and write about it. But this space has become so much more than that, as I've used it to work through most of the stuff hanging out in my head. It's been the best, and sometimes most cryptic form of catharsis.

Randi Lynn has become my go-to breakfast partner as of late. She loves breakfast just as much as I do, and it gives us a great reason to catch up on each other's lives. This morning, we headed out for the Thomaston Cafe right up the road from where we live. The coffee was hot, the service was FABULOUS (Thank you to our wonderful waitress Jen!) and the hollandaise on my Corned Beef Hash Benedict was broken (see photo below)... but it was still good. Randi Lynn had the hash with eggs and toast. I'm happy to cross this local place off the list.

After breakfast, I knew I was headed out to Beth's Farm Market to get some fresh vegetables for the week, and hopefully to load up on strawberries and cream as well. They had no cream, they were all out.. but I got everything else my little veggie and strawberry loving heart desired.  Carrots, Rainbow Chard, Kale, Breakfast Radishes, Peas and Cheese. Oh. My.

And when you're done buying all the veggies, and your littlest sister says, "Should we have some Strawberry Shortcake? We should, right?" You say "Yes. Yes we should".  And you do. And it's delicious.

The littles played on the brilliantly planned and executed playground for awhile after we had our shortcake. There's nearly nothing on this earth as sweet as hearing the two of them giggle as both their mother and their other Aunt both sat on and fell off of one of the pieces on the playground. Better them, than me.

We left Beth's and decided to grab some lunch at the St. George River Cafe. Most of you will remember this place as the first entry that I wrote when I re-established this blog. I feel like maybe I'm a curse to them- as luck would have it, their chef didn't show up today, so they were a little frazzled... but we had a lovely lunch, which I didn't take any photos of. But while we waited for our food, I watched both my niece and my nephew win games of tic-tac-toe, and chatted with my sisters. It was quite lovely. We had a house salad with the most delicious dressing I have ever had in my entire life. I'm pretty positive it was just oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic and lemon juice... but it was salad dressing perfection.  I'm going to dream about it, and try to recreate it for the next couple of days for sure.

So, if any of you need me... I'll be in my kitchen, cooking all of the vegetables, or making all of the salad dressing... trying to determine where I'm going to go next Sunday... and ultimately, how I'm going to make my dream of eating Pad Thai in a boat in Bangkok a reality.  (As an aside, if you've not watched Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix, you're missing out.)
